Get a rested, youthful appearance by removing bags and excess skin.
Medications are administered and either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia are administered for your comfort. Your surgeon and your Board-certified anesthesiologist will determine the level of sedation that is best for you.
The incision lines for eyelid surgery are designed for scars to be well concealed within the natural skin creases of the eyelid region.
Upper Eyelid - Droopy conditions of the upper eyelid can be corrected through an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid allowing removal of fat deposits and removal of excess skin.
Lower Eyelid - Conditions of the lower eyelid may be corrected with an incision just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, excess fatty tissue is removed and/or repositioned. In some cases, a dense adherence of tissue to the orbital rim causes pronounced prominence of the lower eyelid bags (called 'festoons'). This adherence is released when necessary to markedly improve this deformity (called 'arcus marginalis release') and the incision is closed.
Results of eyelid surgery are immediately apparent but are followed by post-operative swelling. Once swelling resolves, the results of the eyelid surgery will be apparent and long lasting.

Who is a good candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
You may be a good candidate for an eyelid lift if you want to make your eye area look younger and more refreshed. Being in generally good health and having reasonable expectations is important for any cosmetic surgery procedure.
How long does Eyelid Surgery take?
Upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery both take approximately 1-2 hours to complete.
What should I expect after Eyelid Surgery?
After surgery, anti-bacterial ointment and cold compresses may be applied to your eyes. Following surgery you can expect to have some bruising and swelling; however, the extent of swelling varies from patient to patient and is not easily predictable. Some patients have minimal swelling and little bruising while others have moderate swelling and bruising. Until healing is complete, diligent use of sun protection is expected and required.
What procedures are often done at the same time as Eyelid Surgery?
Frequently eyelid procedures are combined with face lifts or forehead lifts.
What are alternatives to Eyelid Surgery?
There are a few alternatives to eyelid surgery. Botox, lasers, and skin care treatments can sometimes help achieve your goals.
Where will the procedure take place?
JW Plastic Surgery offers patients 10 hospitals and 5 surgical centers to select from when booking their surgery. In some cases, your personal health history will mean that we will recommend a specific health setting that will best meet your needs.
Most Midwest cosmetic patients decide to have surgery at JW Operatory- our practice - a Joint Commission-accredited facility on the North Shore, due to price and availability.
Patients in Florida most often select our hospital facility in the Lower Florida Keys for pricing and availability reasons.
Does Eyelid Surgery produce permanent results?
The results from eyelid lift surgery are long lasting; however, no surgical lift procedure lasts forever. Unfortunately, gravity and aging will require that all lifts are re-lifted down the road. The procedure is very long lasting and offers permanent surgical results but patients should expect to need another lift in the next 10-20 years as the eye areas continues to age.
How should I select an Eyelid Surgeon?
Eyelid surgery is a procedure that requires an artistic eye and surgical skill. The best way to ensure that you are getting both required skills is to only use the services of a Board Certified plastic surgeon.
Eyelid lifts (Blepharoplasty) can rewind time by removing excess skin and bags that can cause a stressed, aged, and tired appearance. Enjoy eye shadow again and look like you are rested, not aged and tired.
This procedure can transform your face - imagine having no more eye shadow smear when you blink and no more trying to hide bags that simply cannot be covered by makeup. A small investment in time and in yourself can result in a powerful, rejuvenative outcome.
Plastic surgery on the face requires years of surgical experience and judgment honed most appropriately through a plastic surgery training program. We created our “Dare to Compare” Scorecard to educate patients about surgeons' qualifications and to help our patients make an informed decision when selecting their surgeon. Eyelid surgery is a procedure where many doctors who are not plastic surgeons attempt to provide this service. Use the Dare to Compare to learn how to find a true plastic surgeon.
Eyelid procedures can be broken up into two groups - upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery. Upper eyelid lifts remove excess skin on the upper eyelid that makes your eyes seems smaller and “hooded." With lower eyelid surgery, excess skin and fatty tissue that create bags are removed and the skin is redraped. Each of these surgeries can be done under IV sedation in under two hours. We consider this a weekend recovery procedure where you can have the surgery on a Thursday and be back to work on Monday.
Does insurance cover eyelid lift procedures? The simple answer is: not often. Many patients have stories of family members who have been able to have insurance cover upper eyelid lifts. If the surgery is deemed medically necessary, then it may be covered under your insurance plan. However, you must fail a visual fields test (administered by an optometrist) and meet other additional criteria to show that excess upper eyelid skin is interfering with your vision. Lower eyelid surgery, a procedure commonly combined with upper eyelid surgery, is only potentially covered by insurance if you walk on your head. We are an ethical practice that would rather tell you that this procedure is not often covered upfront. We find that our patients appreciate our honest and integrity.
